About the town
The town of Jevíčko
Jevíčko lies in the south-eastern tip of the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic. The historic core is a designated urban heritage zone.
The town centre is formed by a large square from which streets branch out in all four cardinal directions, ringed by perimeter streets. The same layout exists in only one other European city — Karlsruhe in Germany.
More than a quarter of the 14th-century town walls have survived, along with an originally Gothic tower at the former western gate. The tower, rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1593, together with the former Augustinian monastery, the Baroque church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Renaissance manor house dominate the town's skyline. A number of fine Baroque sculptures stand around town.
The synagogue in Soudní Street was the centre of the Jewish community. An Art Nouveau lung sanatorium was built outside the town in the early 20th century.
